Week of November 3rd Newsletter

November 3, 2014

I want to begin by thanking each one of you for taking the time to meet with me here at Benton to discuss your child’s progress.  Students are more successful when parents and teachers are working together to ensure student growth.  Please stay in touch and let me know if you have any other questions or concerns throughout this school year.

This week in math the students will model, read, write, order and compare decimals through hundredths; rename fractions with 10 & 100 in the denominator as a decimal; and add & subtract decimals.

In science the students will continue to study ecosystems and will create a diorama of an ecosystem.

In reading this week the students will continue to study ways to comprehend non-fiction, or informational text.  We will compare and contrast non-fiction passages based on main ideas, purpose, and many other factors.

Social Studies

This week in social studies the students will wrap up their study of Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery.  They will learn how these early explorations helped open up the West for the expansion of the United States.

Benton Family Night

On November 18, from 4:30-7:00 we will have a family night here at Benton.  During the family night we will have a chili dinner fund raiser as well as our Scholastic Book Fair.  We will also be auctioning off a variety of themed baskets.  Each grade level chooses one or two themes and then creates baskets to be auctioned off to help raise money for our PTO. 4th grade’s theme is fishing and movie night.

Here is what I need from you. First, please help by providing items that fit our themes.  For movie night you can send microwave popcorn, unopened age appropriate DVDs, movie candy, etc.  For our fishing themed basket you could help by providing unopened lures, tackle boxes, fishing line, fishing pliers, dip nets, etc.  Please send these items no later than November 14th.

The second thing we need is your attendance if you are able to make it.  As mentioned previously, we will be having a book fair.  It is a great time to come and help your child pick out an affordable book and encourage them to read.
