Week of November 17th Newsletter

November 17, 2014

Parents,

Brrrrrr.  Winter is arriving before its time, but luckily we were able to dodge a snow day so early in the year.  As it gets colder, please help us ensure students are wearing suitable clothing that will keep them comfortable at recess as well as before and after school.  We are approaching a very busy time of year and I will do my best to keep you updated.  If you have specific questions, please contact me.

Social Studies

This week in social studies the students will begin to study the Gold Rush period in American History.  We will explore how the Gold Rush began, the impact it had on expanding the West, and how people actually gained wealth during that event.

Reading

In reading this week the students will be working on strategies to comprehend more difficult informational text and how to summarize what they have read.

Math

In math the students will practice converting metric measurements; measuring to the nearest millimeter; complete a Unit 4 Assessment; and use repeated addition & arrays to model multiplication.

Science

In science this week the students will share and discuss their diorama presentations.

Book Fair and Benton Family Night

Tomorrow night at Benton we will have a family night which includes a chili supper and gift basket raffle to help raise money for PTO and to give parents an opportunity to purchase some books at our book fair.  The family night is from 5-7 p.m. The basket raffle will begin at 7:15 p.m.  Your children should be bringing home a detailed list of chili supper prices.  A single bowl of chili will be $2.50, while a meal with a drink is only $4.00.  Raffle tickets for the gift baskets are only $1.00 each.

Also, we are having some fun with the book fair during the school day.  Each day has a theme and the students can wear or bring items related to each day’s theme.  Tuesday is dress like a book character day, Wednesday is Book Buddy Day (the students can bring a reasonably sized stuffed animal, Thursday is Hats Off to Reading Day (the students can wear a hat to school), and Friday is Read a Shirt Day (the students can wear shirts that have text on them to show reading is all around us).

Coins for Cops

Benton will be collecting loose change to help raise money for the Shop with a Cop Program in the Neosho community. If you are able, please send spare change to help us fill our fish tank to raise money for this worthwhile cause.
